Gifted and Talented Students Develop Best in Challenging Schools

It seems so ironic that gifted and talented students, those who just really seem to love being in school, often have ways to advance faster than the average student through school requirements. This might mean the gifted student graduates earlier than his or her same-age peers. It might also mean starting college earlier, too.

What's so ironic about that? For the students who just do not want to be in school, those who can't sit still or stay awake, those who have no idea of the question just asked, for these students, watching the clock seems to make it move backward some of the time.

The irony that gifted and talented students, usually known for loving school, can speed up the whole process, making the distance between kindergarten and graduation shorter in real time than most others, and those who'd just rather be elsewhere can't do anything to shave off even a few weeks. And in many cases, lack of interest slows the graduation process even further.

It also seems a bit ironic that the gifted and talented students seem to posses the ability to have knowledge just flow into them, with little or no visible effort on the part of the talented student. Even so, the gifted and talented students are usually eager to take on more challenging projects and even when it means making the grade for the more complex project equivalent to the grade the average student makes for the simpler project.

Gifted and talented students are likely to face these ironies as mere challenges instead. After all, students with this designated level of achievement often grow to love learning for nothing more than the joy of learning. Extra assignments, more challenging projects just stimulate the desire in the gifted student to reach yet another level of personal excellence.

If working a little bit harder means gifted and talented students can advance to the next level faster than other students maintaining a steadier pace do, they don't mind the extra work at all. Gifted and talented students can be competitive and passionate about their special interests and are probably the most competitive with themselves.

For many gifted and talented students, finishing faster and graduating earlier is almost like a race against time. Nobody else's time to graduation matters.

For many gifted and talented students, learning is fun. And everybody knows time flies when you're having fun.
